Aspartame

Product Analysis

Aspartame is a synthetic sweetener that contains very few calories and can be used instead of sugar. This food additive is a combination of two amino acids:

aspartic acid and phenylalanine. People on diets often use aspartame to reduce the calories in their food and thus lose weight.

Aspartame, on the other hand, is commonly used as a sweetener in prepared foods and beverages and in recipes that do not require much heat (because heat breaks down aspartame). It can also be found as a flavoring in some medicines.

As mentioned, aspartame is an extremely high sweetener that has been approved for use in more than 90 countries and in more than 6,000 products. Aspartame in doses up to 4000 mg / kg body weight is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic.

Aspartame is completely hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal tract to its constituent amino acids, aspartate, phenylalanine and methanol.

Aspartame is one of the most complex foods to test. Studies by more than 100 government regulators have shown that the substance is safe for use at current levels. Several clinical trials have shown that using aspartame instead of sugar reduces calories and body weight in adults and children.

Common uses of aspartame

Food products

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). When you add this sweetener to your food or drink, it provides some calories, but try to use it in a much smaller amount of sugar, because it is 200 times sweeter than sugar.

Aspartame is marketed under several different names, including NutraSweet and Equal. You may see these brands on the colorful packages you see next to the sugar on your table in a restaurant. Aspartame is also used in many packaged foods.

Examples of foods that may be sweetened by aspartame include:

  • Diet drinks
  • Powdered drinks
  • Chewing gum
  • Dry pudding mixture or jelly
  • breakfast cereal
  • Some dairy products
  • Dried dessert mix
  • Frozen desserts

Aspartame is generally not used in cooked foods because it loses its sweetness when heated. You can check the list of ingredients to see if your food contains aspartame. Some food manufacturers also put the phrase “Phenylketonurics: containing phenylalanine” on the package.

Pharmaceutical industries

In pharmaceutical products, aspartame is often used as a sugar substitute in chewable tablets and sugar-free liquids.

On the other hand, aspartame and other sweetening agents are often added to various forms of medicine to partially hide the bitter taste of the medicine and improve its taste in general.

Is aspartame safe?

Although this artificial sweetener has been criticized by some natural food organizations, government agencies and major health organizations continue to advocate for the safety of aspartame. Of course, there are some people who should avoid sweeteners.

If you have a condition called phenylketonuria (PKU), you should follow a special diet that limits or eliminates aspartame. Others on a diet also avoid aspartame because they experience headaches or other symptoms that they feel are sweetening.

The safety of aspartame has been studied since its discovery and is one of the most difficult foods to test. More than 100 regulatory agencies in the respective countries, including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the British Food Standards Agency and the European Food Agency, the Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Health Authorities of Canada, Australia and New Zealand, use aspartame for human consumption. They have considered it safe.

Since 2017, clinical trials have shown that using aspartame (or other non-nutritive sweeteners) instead of sugar reduces calorie intake and body weight in adults and children.

In a 2017 study on the metabolic effects of aspartame, it was found that the drug did not affect blood sugar, insulin, total cholesterol and triglycerides.
